Optomap Ultra-Widefield Retina Imaging

Revolutionary, non-invasive retinal imaging allows the doctors at Tofield Eyecare to capture a wide-field view of the retina. High-resolution imaging enables us to detect early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

For Adults (Ages 19-64):

Optos retinal imaging is included in all our comprehensive eye exams for patients aged 19 to 64. Unlike traditional retinal exams, Optomap provides up to a 200-degree view of the retina, offering a more comprehensive assessment of your eye health.

It is safe for all ages as it is fast, non-invasive, and does not require dilation.

For Children:

Comprehensive children's eye exam with Optomap Retina Imaging is only $35.
Our doctors recommend yearly Optomap imaging for all children.

Children often do not report vision problems, and a full retinal assessment can be challenging. Optos imaging enables early detection of retinal changes without the need for dilation—no stinging drops and no discomfort!

This advanced imaging helps our doctors detect rare but serious conditions in children, such as retinal tumors and abnormalities, which, if left undetected, can lead to permanent vision loss.

After using Optomap retinal imaging in Tofield Eyecare since 2023, we have firsthand experience detecting eye diseases in children early, allowing them to receive timely specialist care and treatment.

Why Optomap for Kids?

  • Developed by a parent whose child lost vision due to retinal detachment.

  • Allows for long-term tracking of eye health as your child grows.

  • Ideal for active kids and those who play sports, as they are at higher risk for retinal injuries.

  • Private insurance may cover the cost of your child’s eye exam with Optomap.

For Seniors:

Comprehensive senior’s eye exam with Optomap Retina Imaging is only $50.
Optomap imaging for seniors includes Autofluorescence Imaging, which enhances our ability to detect early changes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). This allows for earlier detection of eye diseases such as:

  • Glaucoma

  • Macular degeneration

  • Retinal tears and detachments

  • Even certain types of cancer

Optomap imaging also enables our doctors to examine the small blood vessels in your eye, helping detect changes related to systemic conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss, and Optomap retina imaging allows for earlier detection compared to conventional technologies. Yearly imaging provides a permanent record of your eye health, enabling our doctors to compare results year over year and catch even the smallest changes before they become significant problems.

Optical Coherence Tomopgrahy (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scan

An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan is one of the latest advancements in eye imaging technology. Similar to an ultrasound, this diagnostic technique uses light instead of sound waves to capture high-resolution images of the structural layers at the back of the eye.

A scanning laser is used to analyze the layers of the retina and optic nerve, detecting early signs of eye diseases—similar to a CT scan for the eye. This non-invasive test uses light without radiation and is essential for the early diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinal disease.

With an OCT scan, our doctors obtain color-coded, cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing for early detection and treatment of conditions such as:

✅ Wet and dry age-related macular degeneration
✅ Glaucoma
✅ Retinal detachment

✅ Diabetic retinopathy

Our doctors utilize OCT imaging daily to diagnose, monitor, and treat various eye diseases, ensuring the highest level of care for our patients.

Coverage & Costs

✅ Alberta Health often covers initial OCT imaging for diagnosing and managing eye disease (conditions apply).
💰 Repeat OCT imaging within the same year may have an associated cost.

Computerized Visual Field Testing

Visual Field Testing at Tofield Eye Care

A visual field test measures your peripheral (side) vision to detect blind spots, vision loss, or abnormalities. It’s a quick, painless test that requires no eye drops—just your focus and ability to follow instructions.

During the test, you’ll keep your gaze fixed on a central object while lights flash in different areas. You’ll press a button whenever you see a light, helping us map out your visual field. Each eye is tested separately, and the process takes about 10-20 minutes.

At Tofield Eye Care, we use visual field testing daily to monitor glaucoma, assess retinal health, detect vision loss from strokes, and rule out neurological concerns. We also check for medication-related eye damage, including from hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil).
