Optomap® Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging
Optomap® ultra-widefield digital imaging is an advanced technology that captures a panoramic, 200-degree view of the inside of your eye — showing nearly 80% of your retina in a single image. This detailed retinal “map” helps your optometrist identify and monitor areas that may need closer attention. It also allows your doctor to visually explain your eye health, making it an excellent tool for both diagnosis and patient education.

How Optomap Works?
A Revolution in Retinal Imaging
Optomap imaging captures up to a 200-degree view of your retina in one single, quick scan — compared to only about 45 degrees with traditional imaging.
It’s safe for all ages, non-invasive, and requires no dilation, making it ideal for everyone in the family.
California af Optomap
California af Optomap model images the eye faster than previous generations, allowing younger and older patients to be imaged in just seconds.
The California af was the first Optomap to incorporate both composite colour and autofluorescence digital imaging. The autofluorescence digital image provides us with another tool in trying to determine the cause of underlying vision complaints. It can help our eye doctors uncover problems that would previously go undiagnosed or explained.

Composite Colour Imaging
Composite Colour Digital Imaging uses advanced laser technology to capture highly detailed images of the back of your eye. By using multiple laser wavelengths that penetrate the retina at different depths, your optometrist can clearly see and assess the various layers of retinal tissue. This allows for more accurate detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of eye diseases.
The green laser (532 nm) highlights the outer layers of the retina, while the red laser (635 nm) captures the deeper layers between the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the choroid. When these two images are combined, they create a vibrant, full-colour digital view—helping your optometrist explain your results and monitor your eye health with greater precision.
Autofluorescence Imaging
The auto-fluorescence (AF) mode on the Optos California system allows our optometrists to detect subtle changes within the retina that may not appear in standard retinal photos or even during a dilated eye exam. This advanced imaging highlights metabolic or structural abnormalities, making it especially useful for monitoring conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and hydroxychloroquine toxicity.
Because it’s non-invasive and safe for all ages, this test can be performed regularly to help determine whether a retinal condition is active or stable, ensuring timely and precise management of your eye health.

How Optomap Complements Your Eye Exam?
While the Optomap California captures an impressive ultra-wide view of your retina, it doesn’t replace a traditional dilated eye exam, which remains essential for patients with diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, or macular degeneration.
Optomap imaging is a powerful tool that helps our optometrists detect and monitor eye conditions and provides a digital record to track changes over time. It’s especially helpful for patients without symptoms and is also a great way to visually understand your eye health.

For Children
Our doctors recommend yearly Optomap imaging for all children, since many vision problems can go unnoticed at an early age. Having used Optomap imaging since 2023, our clinic has successfully detected eye diseases in children early, enabling timely specialist care and vision-saving treatment.
Comprehensive children’s eye exams with Optomap Retina Imaging are only $35.
Why It’s Important
-
Children may not report vision problems
-
Optomap provides a complete retinal view without dilation — no stinging drops, no discomfort
-
Detects rare but serious conditions like retinal tumors and abnormalities early
Why Optomap for Kids?
-
Developed by a parent whose child lost vision due to a retinal detachment
-
Enables long-term tracking as your child grows
-
Ideal for active children and athletes, who are at higher risk for retinal injuries
-
Private insurance may cover the cost of your child’s Optomap exam

For Adults (Ages 19–64)
Optomap retinal imaging is included in all our comprehensive eye exams for patients aged 19 to 64.It provides a more complete assessment of your eye health than traditional methods, helping detect small changes early — often before you notice symptoms.
Key Benefits
-
Included in every adult comprehensive exam
-
Non-invasive and dilation-free
-
Enables early detection of sight-threatening conditions

For Seniors (65+)
Comprehensive senior eye exams with Optomap Retina Imaging are only $50 and include Autofluorescence Imaging — allowing detection of the earliest pigment changes in the retina.
Optomap helps detect:
-
Glaucoma
-
Macular degeneration
-
Retinal tears and detachments
-
Certain types of cancer
It also allows our doctors to monitor tiny retinal blood vessels, detecting early signs of hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol — all of which can affect vision.
Because diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss, yearly Optomap imaging provides a permanent record of your eye health, enabling early detection and precise year-over-year comparisons.
